DISAPPEAR!

Here's an idea. For seven days out of every month, I'd like to retreat from being me. I'd take a deep breath and step out of the house and disappear for a week. Destination: Irrelevant.

While on the road, I'd be writing, about the journey and the stay, taking photos of the nice people I meet along the way. When the week is done and I'm back home, I can coherently craft my notes into stories of utter beauty and interest and adventure-filled glee. I'd pick out my best photographs and post them for the world to live through my eyes. Wouldn't that be grand?

In a year, I'd have twelve memorable adventures, all with homes online and in print. And I'd be living an enchanted life, the way I'd like my life to be lived, and sharing that life with other, like-minded people, who long for nothing but the wind in their faces, the scent of fresh flowers, the sun setting upon a mountain valley.

I think it's time I started.

Last year, Lala and I were able to catch Metropolis with live score by Rubber Inc. We feel it is imperative that you go out and catch at least one of these performances this month, lest you be described as nekulturny (yes, I know this is a Russian word, not a German one. i use it because i want to).

After the success of last year's "Movies Live:
Classic German Silent Movies 1922-1927", the
Goethe-Institut Manila is back with another dose
of classic German silent movies. "Movies Live II:
German Silent Film Festival" will feature the
films of Austrian-American director Fritz Lang,
whose "Metropolis" is widely considered the most
influential silent film ever made.

Fritz Lang (1890-1976) worked in Germany making
films that tackled themes like madness, cruelty,
fear and death until 1932, when he fled the
country to escape the Nazis. He would eventually
end up in Hollywood, where he directed films for
over 20 years. Lang was described by many as a
perfectionist, sometimes even tyrannical, and
gained infamy for his maltreatment of actors.
Despite that, it cannot be denied that he was a
pioneer: it would be difficult to imagine science
fiction or fantasy today without "Metropolis".

Included in this year's set of films are "Dr.
Mabuse the Gambler, Part I: A Portrait of Our
Time", "Dr. Mabuse the Gambler, Part II: Inferno,
a Play of People in Our Time", a two-part
detective story about the mad Dr. Mabuse, a master
of disguises, and "Spies", a film about the leader
of an international bank who doubles as a criminal
mastermind. "Metropolis" will also be shown. All
films will be accompanied by a live music score
done by some of the country's best bands.
