In the episode "Relics," off the sixth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, USS Enterprise Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, believed killed in action, is found alive on the USS Jenolen, retrieved from the pattern buffer of the ship's transporter. He is a man displaced in time, kept in stasis in digital limbo and shunted some seven decades into the future. Despite initially feeling old and obsolete, Scotty, by the end of the episode, has saved the Enterprise (this time the NCC-1701D), earned the crew's respect, and regained his sense of self worth. He flies off in a shuttlecraft, given to him by the Enterprise, to continue with his own personal adventure.

James Doohan, the Canadian-born actor who played Montgomery Scott died in his sleep early Wednesday, from pneumonia and Alzheimer's Disease. He spent 85 years on this planet. His ashes will be shot into space. He shall be missed. "Here's to ya, lad."
